A diverse renewable energy base

Genex Power Limited is an Australian-based public company focused on developing a diverse portfolio of renewable energy generation and storage projects in Australia. Our operations span Queensland and New South Wales, encompassing large-scale batteries, pumped storage hydro, wind, and solar energy solutions. As of 31 July 2024, Genex is a wholly owned subsidiary of Electric Power Development Co., Ltd (J-POWER).

Our flagship project, the Kidston Clean Energy Hub in North Queensland, represents the co-location of solar, pumped storage hydro, and wind energy on a large scale. It includes the 50MW Stage 1 Solar Project, which is already operational, the 250MW/2,000MWh Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project currently under construction, and the up to 258MW Kidston Wind Project in development. Genex also has a 50MW/100MWh operational battery energy storage system (BESS) at Bouldercombe in central Queensland and a 50MW operating solar farm at Jemalong in central west NSW.

In line with our growth strategy, we are expanding our dynamic portfolio with the Bulli Creek Clean Energy Park, located 45km southwest of Millmerran, Queensland. This multi-stage development aims to achieve up to 2 GW of large-scale solar and BESS capacity.

Genex is focused on delivering its portfolio of renewable energy generation and storage projects

Genex’s Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project (K2-Hydro) is the first pumped hydro project to be developed in over 40 years in Australia. K2-Hydro is currently under construction, with energisation expected in 2025. Genex’s first standalone, large-scale battery energy storage project is its 50MW/100MWh Bouldercombe Battery Project (BBP), located in Rockhampton Queensland, and has been operating since November 2023. Genex is continuing to further expand its battery strategy via its pipeline opportunities comprising of the development of its up to 2GW multi-stage Bulli Creek Clean Energy Project which will be a renewable energy and storage powerhouse of large-scale BESS and solar, as well as the BBP 2 Project at 50MW/100MWh.

With over 2.25GW of renewable energy & storage projects in development, Genex is well placed as Australia’s leading renewable energy and storage company.

Gold Rush Origins to a Renewable Energy Frontier

Kidston, a once-bustling mining town on the west bank of Queensland’s Copperfield River, has seen its fortunes shift in dramatic ways over the past century. Its story began in 1907 with the discovery of gold, sparking what became known as the Oaks Rush. This discovery catalysed rapid growth, drawing miners and prospectors from across the north, hopeful to strike it rich. Within the first three years, approximately 622,000 grams of gold were mined, transforming Kidston into a lively hub seemingly overnight. By 1908, around 1,400 residents filled the town’s tents and makeshift lodgings, and a hefty 430,000 grams of gold had been extracted from the earth beneath their feet.

The Oaks Rush was the heartbeat of Kidston’s early years, where fortunes flowed with the gold extracted from the Copperfield River’s bedrock. Though mining activity declined over the years, the mine continued operating, intermittently, until its first closure in 1945. Kidston’s revival came in 1979 when Kidston Gold Mines resumed full-scale production, driving a new wave of growth and activity. This resurgence, however, was temporary. Kidston’s mine ceased operations permanently in 2001, leaving a legacy of gold and an uncertain future as mining structures lay dormant and the township grew silent.

Yet in a turn no one would have predicted, Kidston has been reborn in recent years. Leveraging the site’s two large disused pits from the gold mining days, Kidston is now home to the Kidston Clean Energy Hub. At its core is the Kidston Pumped Storage Hydro Project, notably Australia’s first pumped storage hydro facility developed in over four decades.

The Kidston Clean Energy Hub has become a model of how old industrial sites can be repurposed to serve modern needs. The site now stands as a sustainable development of hydro, wind, and solar, converting the remnants of a bygone era into an integrated renewable powerhouse that supports Queensland’s green energy goals.

Genex will use its core competencies of project identification, execution, partner relations and knowledge of the Australian energy markets to continue to drive growth
